What we check first when an AC stops cooling
Most no-cool calls in Raleigh come down to a short list, and all of it is diagnosable on the first visit.
It hums, and the fan will not start
Usually: A failed run capacitor, which is the most common single cause of a no-cool call. It is a small part that fails quietly in heat, and the system will sit there humming without ever starting.
Diagnosable in minutes and carried on the truck.
The outdoor unit never runs, or never stops
Usually: The contactor. Its contacts either weld shut, so the unit runs continuously, or stop pulling in at all, so it never runs. Which of the two you have tells us which failure it is.
Also carried, and replaced on the first visit.
Ice on the indoor coil, or no air moving
Usually: Nearly always airflow underneath, and often just a loaded filter. A failed blower motor stops the air altogether.
We clear the ice, find what restricted the airflow, and check the motor rather than assuming the coil.
It shut itself off and will not restart
Usually: A clogged condensate drain tripping the float switch. That is the system deliberately shutting down to protect your ceiling.
We clear the drain, test the switch, and work out why it blocked in the first place.
Refrigerant is the one worth being careful about. Low refrigerant is not a level that needs topping off. It is a leak, and the leak is what gets found. Anyone who adds refrigerant without finding the leak has sold you the same repair again next summer.
Say what the system is doing and you will get a real time on the phone. Same day covers most of Raleigh.
In Raleigh, AC repair usually means heat pump repair
North Carolina has one of the highest shares of heat pump heating in the country, roughly four in ten homes according to the EIA's 2020 residential energy survey. Where you have one, the same outdoor unit that cools your house in July is what heats it in January, which changes what AC repair actually involves.
A failing reversing valve is the clearest example. It decides whether the system heats or cools, and when it sticks or leaks internally you get weak performance in one mode and normal performance in the other. A failed defrost board shows up in winter as a unit that ices over outdoors and never clears itself.
The one that costs the most money quietly is auxiliary strip heat running because the compressor is not. The house stays warm, nothing seems obviously wrong, and the electric bill arrives in February with the answer.
If your outdoor unit runs in both seasons, it is a heat pump, and this is the equipment we work on most.
What happens after you call
You reach a person
24/7. Not a queue, and not a callback form.
The system gets tested
Electrical readings, refrigerant pressures, airflow. The failure gets identified rather than guessed at from the symptom you described on the phone, which is the difference between fixing the fault and replacing the part the fault destroyed.
You hear what it takes before you authorize it
What failed, and what the repair involves. If the system is old enough that repair is the wrong answer, you hear that too.
The licensed contractor does the work
The person who answered the phone is the person at your door.
Older homes inside the beltline, newer homes north of it
Raleigh is two housing stocks with two different failure patterns.
Inside the beltline, the homes are older than their air conditioning. Ductwork was retrofitted into crawlspaces and attics never designed to carry it, so restricted airflow is the first thing worth checking when one of these systems struggles. The duct design has been working against the equipment since the day it went in.
North Raleigh and the newer subdivisions are the opposite. The ductwork is usually fine, and the builder-grade equipment is now reaching the age where capacitors, contactors, and eventually compressors start to fail.
Knowing which of the two you are standing in changes what gets checked first.

The contractor who answers is the contractor who arrives
Alliance Comfort Services LLC is licensed in North Carolina, number L.34059, through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors.
That license belongs to the person who does the work, not to a corporate office. There is one phone number, it does not route through a dispatch center, and it reaches the same contractor every time regardless of where you found it.
One licensed contractor diagnoses it, prices it, and does the work, so nothing is lost in a handoff. Larger companies send whoever is free that day, and the person who answered the phone is not accountable for what happens next.
What a repair costs
There is no honest way to publish a repair price before anyone has looked at the system, and the ranges you find elsewhere are wide enough to tell you nothing.
What determines it is which part failed, whether the compressor is involved, and whether refrigerant is leaking and where from.
$59 System Tune-Up
New customers. If your system is still running and you would rather not have this conversation in July, this is a full inspection before the season turns, while a problem is still small.
Call (919) 510-1472Common questions
- Should I repair this or replace it?
- Four things decide it. The age of the system. Whether the compressor is the failed part, because that is the expensive one. Whether it still runs R-22, which is no longer produced and has become costly to service. And whether this is the same fault returning for the second or third time. If three of the four point the same direction, we will say so rather than sell you a repair that buys one more summer.
- Why is my air conditioner blowing warm air?
- Usually the outdoor unit is not running while the indoor blower is, which points at the capacitor, the contactor, or a tripped breaker. It can also be refrigerant loss, or a coil frozen solid and no longer exchanging heat.
- Why does my AC keep shutting off and starting again?
- Short-cycling. Usually a restricted filter or coil, a failing capacitor, low refrigerant, or a thermostat reading the wrong part of the room. Worth attention, because it wears the compressor faster than continuous running does.
- Do you actually answer at night?
- Yes, and by a licensed contractor rather than an answering service taking a message.
