Ductless mini-splits in Raleigh, NC
One room that is always too hot or too cold, and no duct running to it worth speaking of. That is the problem ductless mini-splits in Raleigh, NC exist to solve. A licensed North Carolina contractor answers this number and will tell you whether it is your answer.
Call (919) 510-1472When it is the right answer
A mini-split is an outdoor unit and one or more indoor heads, joined by a line set through a hole about three inches across. No ductwork, which is the whole point and also the whole limitation.
The ductwork never went there
A converted garage, a bonus room over one, a finished attic, a sunroom, an addition. The house was ducted before that space existed and extending a trunk line into it is often the more expensive half of the job.
The ducts cannot be made to fit
Older houses inside the beltline were not built around ductwork, and some of them have no honest route for it. Where a duct run would mean soffits through finished rooms or a chase that eats a closet, a wall unit and a three inch hole is the smaller intervention.
One room needs its own answer
A home office that has to be comfortable while the rest of the house is set back, a guest suite used twice a year, a workshop nobody wants to condition in August. Its own system on its own thermostat costs less to run than persuading the central system to serve it.
Describe the room and what it does in summer and winter, and you will get a straight answer about whether ductless is the right fix.
When it is the wrong answer
If the room has a duct running to it and is still uncomfortable, a mini-split is treating a symptom. An undersized trunk line, a return that was never big enough, a flex duct crushed behind a joist, or a run leaking half its air into a crawlspace all produce exactly the room you are describing, and all of them are cheaper to fix than to work around.
Bolting a second system to the wall of that room leaves the original fault in place, where it keeps costing you on every other room the same duct system serves. It also puts a head on a wall you have to look at for fifteen years.
The question worth asking is why the room is uncomfortable, not what to add to it. If the honest answer is the ductwork, we will say so, and the duct side of a replacement is where that conversation belongs.
What moves the price on a ductless job
Three things, and all of them are specific to the house rather than to the equipment you pick.
How many indoor heads. One head on one outdoor unit is the simple case. A multi-zone system covering three rooms is a different piece of equipment and a different amount of work.
Where the line set has to run. An indoor head on an exterior wall with the outdoor unit directly behind it is the short version. A head on an interior wall, a run through a finished ceiling, or a long route around the house is the long one.
What the electrical panel has spare. A mini-split needs its own circuit, and an older panel does not always have the capacity or the space for it.
For a whole-system replacement rather than a single room, the decision is worked through on AC installation and replacement in Raleigh. Because a mini-split is a heat pump, what goes wrong with one later is on heat pump repair.
Who installs it
Alliance Comfort Services LLC is licensed in North Carolina, number L.34059, through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors. The licensed contractor who quotes the job is the one who runs the line set and sets the charge, so the person who told you where the head would go is the person who put it there.
Mitsubishi and Daikin are the two names that matter most in this category and both are serviced, along with Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman and the rest of the list.
How the job actually goes
Somebody looks at the room and the house
Where the indoor head can go, where the outdoor unit can sit, how the line set gets between them, and what the electrical panel has spare. None of that is answerable from a photograph.
The room gets sized, not guessed
A mini-split that is too big short cycles and leaves the room humid, which in a Triangle summer is worse than being slightly warm. Sizing comes from the room, its glass, and its insulation.
You get a written scope before anything is ordered
The equipment named, the head locations agreed, the line set route drawn, and the electrical work spelled out. Financing is available and we go through it on the call.
Installation, then commissioning
The line set is evacuated and the charge is set by measurement rather than by feel, and the system is tested in both heating and cooling before anybody leaves.
Common questions
- Will a mini-split actually heat the room in a Raleigh winter?
- Yes. A mini-split is a heat pump, and it moves heat in both directions, so it heats in January and cools in July from the same box. Triangle winters are well inside what modern equipment handles, and this is the same technology already heating roughly four in ten homes in North Carolina.
- Are they noisy?
- The indoor head is quieter than a central system, because the compressor is the noisy part and it is outside. The outdoor unit is a small heat pump and sits where a condenser would.
- Do I need one head per room?
- One head serves one space, so a multi-zone system with several heads on one outdoor unit is how a few rooms get covered. Each head has its own thermostat, which is often the actual point.
- What does one cost?
- It depends on how many indoor heads, how far the line set has to run, and what the electrical panel needs, and nobody can tell you honestly before seeing the space. You get a real number in writing after the visit, and financing is available.
