Heat pump repair in Raleigh, NC
Cold air out of the vents in January, or an outdoor unit buried in ice. Those are the two things that bring most Raleigh homeowners here, and only one of them is always a fault. Heat pump repair in Raleigh, NC starts with telling the two apart. This number reaches a licensed North Carolina contractor at any hour, 24/7, and most of Raleigh can be seen the same day.

One machine, two seasons, and the part that decides which
A heat pump does not make heat. It moves heat that already exists, pulling warmth out of outdoor air that feels cold to you but is not cold to refrigerant. Run that cycle backwards and the same box becomes your air conditioner.
The part that decides the direction is the reversing valve. That is why air conditioning repair and heating repair are the same trade on this equipment.
North Carolina has one of the highest shares of heat pump heating in the country. Roughly four in ten homes in the state are heated this way, according to the EIA's 2020 residential energy survey, and plenty of homes in Raleigh have no furnace at all.
Ice on your outdoor unit is sometimes the machine working
In damp weather in the thirties and forties, the outdoor coil runs below freezing and below the dew point at once. Moisture condenses on it and freezes. Every heat pump in the Triangle does this.
The system is built to clear it. Every so often the control board flips the reversing valve into cooling for a few minutes, which makes the outdoor coil hot and melts the ice off. The outdoor fan stops, backup heat comes on indoors so you are not blowing cold air, then it flips back.
A normal defrost cycle
- Steam rising off the outdoor unit, and a whoosh at the changeover.
- The outdoor fan stopped while the rest of the unit runs.
- Supply air cooler than usual for five to fifteen minutes.
- Normal heat returns and the coil is clear.
If that is what happened, your heat pump is fine and you do not need to call anybody.
Not normal, and worth a call
- Ice still there hours later, through more than one defrost.
- Ice thick enough to bury the fan grille.
- A solid block at the base, growing rather than draining.
- Defrost kicking in every few minutes instead of every hour or so.
- Ice plus a house that is not getting warm.
Any of those is a fault rather than a cold snap, and it will not clear itself.
What is behind the second column: a failed defrost board or coil sensor, a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, or airflow blocked by leaves, drifted mulch, or a cover somebody left on. A plugged base pan drain does it too, because meltwater refreezes instead of draining.
Do not chip or scrape ice off the unit. The coil fins and refrigerant tubing sit directly underneath, and one puncture turns a repair into a replacement. Emergency heat stops the outdoor unit and lets the ice melt while the house stays warm.
In the second column? It will not clear on its own, and a licensed contractor answers this number at any hour.
What actually fails on a heat pump
The reversing valve, and its signature
Because it controls direction, a valve that sticks or leaks internally gives weak performance in one mode and normal performance in the other. Fine all summer, poor in December. That split is the tell, and it is worth knowing before anybody quotes you a compressor.
The defrost board
A failed board is behind most units that ice over and never clear. The equipment is otherwise healthy. It never gets the instruction to melt itself off.
Auxiliary strip heat, the expensive one
Strip heat is the electric backup element, and if the compressor stops running it carries the whole house alone. The house stays warm, nothing sounds wrong, and the February power bill arrives with the answer. This is the failure homeowners find last and pay for longest.
Refrigerant loss
It shows up in heating before cooling, because heating has less margin to give away. Low refrigerant is a leak, not a level, and the leak is what gets found.
Any of these four is a diagnosis, not a guess. Say what the system has been doing and you will hear which one it sounds like.
Failures are much the same across brands. Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Amana, Rheem, Bryant, American Standard, Daikin and Mitsubishi are all serviced.
If your system burns gas in winter, you have a furnace, and that is a different set of parts. If the question has moved past this repair to whether the equipment is worth keeping, that decision is worked through on installation and replacement.
Who answers, and what it costs
You reach a licensed contractor, 24/7, not a queue and not a callback form. If the heat is out overnight, that is what emergency service is for.
On site, the checks are the ones this page has already described: reversing valve behavior in both modes, defrost operation, the ice pattern itself, and what the strip heat is doing while the compressor should be running. You hear what failed and what the repair involves before you authorize anything.
Alliance Comfort Services LLC is licensed in North Carolina, number L.34059, through the NC State Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating & Fire Sprinkler Contractors. That license belongs to the person doing the work. The Google rating is 5.0 from 25 reviews.
Cost depends on which part failed and whether the compressor or a refrigerant leak is involved, and no honest number exists before the system is tested.
$59 System Tune-Up
New customers. If your heat pump still runs, this is a full inspection before the season turns, defrost operation included, while a problem is still small.
Call (919) 510-1472Common questions
- Is it normal for my heat pump to ice up in a Raleigh winter?
- Within limits, yes. Frost that the system melts off on a defrost cycle is normal and needs no call. Ice surviving several hours, or a solid block at the base, is a fault.
- Why is my heat pump blowing cool air?
- Look at the outdoor unit. If the blower is moving air while the outdoor unit sits dead, the compressor side has stopped. If both run and the air is only cool, that can be normal: a heat pump runs longer at a lower supply temperature than a furnace does.
- My power bill jumped in January but the house feels fine. Is something wrong?
- Probably. That is strip heat carrying the load while the compressor is not running. Comfort stays normal, efficiency collapses, and the bill is the first symptom anyone notices.
- What does emergency heat actually do?
- It stops the outdoor unit and heats the house on the electric strip heat alone. It costs more to run and it is not a repair, but it is the right switch while ice melts off the outdoor unit or while you are waiting for someone to look at it. Switch it back once the system is working.
